Challenge
A large government contractor had written a public-facing application for an agency client, but the application was having production outages every 30 minutes.
Solution
Elemental Solutions’ staff used their experience in application architecture and design to identify a list of common reasons for application failures. We then tested these theories by examining the source code and running tests on the system while monitoring memory usage, resource utilization, database connections and transactions and application server stack dumps. Based on results, we refactored the application and localized resource management and transaction management code. Our new solution featured an exception-handling framework distributed throughout the application as opposed to managing it manually.
Results
The application code was corrected to prevent future unscheduled outages within a few days.
