Finding the Pattern

Challenge
A large government modernization project had just been started. The high-level architecture had been documented in the proposal but the details had yet to be addressed. There were competing objectives and opinions regarding what should be done.

Solution
Elemental Solutions proposed an approach focused on the use of non-functional requirements to help guide the decision process when choosing the architectural patterns and technologies for the project. We also defined architecture documentation methods and standards using the concept of architectural views, identified and mapped components to hardware components and outlined software structure and runtime interactions.

Results
Using our recommended approach, the client’s teams were able to assess the impact of changes to the system and evaluate tradeoffs between architectural alternatives. While the architecture continues to evolve, the approach and methods remain in place today.
